In Romans 3, Paul explains and reiterates the basis of unity for the church. We are all sinners condemned and rescue is only found in the cross of Jesus Christ.

In this portion of Chapter 2, Paul writes to the church at Rome about those who have put their hope in religion rather than God’s mercy. They have a form of Religious Inoculation. An inoculation gives you a weaker, watered down version of a disease to keep you from catching the real one. Religious inoculation means you have just enough knowledge about God to keep you from the Gospel.

Paul continues building his case that because God has plainly revealed Himself, mankind is without excuse. In this teaching, Paul condemns self-righteousness as just as bad as no righteousness at all.

In the 1st half chapter 1 of Romans, Paul gives us a glorious description of the Gospel. In a way, he’s like a doctor prescribing a wonderful cure. In the last half of chapter 1 Paul gives us the diagnosis – we have a terminal illness called sin.
